Il examine ensuite la thèse principale de M. Gauchet, qu'il relève ainsi: « Le christianisme aura été la religion de la sortie de la religion et la racine de la modernité » (p. 11). Pour en évaluer la portée, l'A. propose des discernements: quelle figure de la Transcendance est-elle présupposée? Quelle a été la portée du monothéisme d'Israël? Quelle est la signification de la « kénose » de Dieu en christianisme? Celui-ci constitue-t-il la seule ou la principale « racine » de notre modernité? The writer starts from an observation by E. Durkheim to the effect that religion, which in the beginning embraced everything, is withdrawing progressively from social relationships as a result of political, economic and scientific bodies dissociating themselves more and more from the religous body. He goes on to consider the main argument of M. Gauchet, which he takes to be: "Christianity will have been the religion to end religion, and the root of modernity" (p. 11). Exploring the full implications of this, the writer puts some discriminating questions: What form of Transcendence is presupposed? What has been the significance of the monotheism of Israel? In Christianity, how significant is the "kénose" of God? Is Christianith the main or only "root" of our modernity?
