This article, an extract from a thesis recently defended at the Sorbonne and the Institut Catholique of Paris, presents and discusses the positions of Teilhard de Chardin on the problem of evil. This problem, a perennial one for philosophers and theologians, was the object of original thought on the part of the Jesuit scholar. Even if certain aspects of it can be explained, evil remains a mystery: in spite of all attempts to understand it, evil remains incomprehensible outside of a general Christology, and therefore of the faith. As philosopher, as evolutionist and stoïcist then as theologian, drawing on St. Paul and St. John and excited by the theology of the Mystical Body and the Pleroma, Teilhard proposes a doctrine of evil; the principal aspects of his thought are analysed here. |
