Le jugement que porte Bayle sur le doute pyrrhonien, doute tout à fait radical, est sévère y en dépit de l'appartenance indéniable de B. au courant sceptique; il pense qu'à la force des arguments sceptiques on ne peut opposer que la seule foi. La suite de l'article, dans le prochain fascicule, étudiera l'application à l'histoire du doute pyrrhonien, puis du doute méthodique cartésien. A systematic study of the vocabulary of doubt in Bayle's work. The article first brings out the classical theological sense of doubt: intellectual uncertainty accompanied to a greater or lesser extent by voluntary connotations, the temptation of incredulity, either total or about a particular question; a good usage or an apologetical service of doubt is possible. Bayle passes a severe judgement on Pyrrhonical, totally radical doubt, although he is, admittedly, a sceptical thinker; in his opinion faith alone can be opposed to the strength of the sceptical arguments. The continuation of the article, in the next number, will investigate Pyrrhonical, then Cartesian methodical doubt, as applied to history. |
