Summary: | The Messianic character of Ps 72 is usually discussed by identifying the themes of Messiah and of universal kingship. A syntactic and lexical analysis of the text, with attention given to allusions to Solomon's kingship, makes it possible to define the psalm as a programmatic speech, in the political sense of the term, and to date it to the time of Hezekiah. As a piece of literature which goes hand in hand with social idealism, Ps 72 is Messianic: a critical memory of the past and an assessment of the weaknesses of the present lead to a coherent vision of the people's future. |
