Description
Summary:A synchronical reading of John 4,4-42 shows that the narrative program, Jesus' gathering of the Samaritans around himself, is realised by means of two overlapping sub-programs, namely that of the woman (4,7-29), and that of the Samaritans themselves (4,28-42). The story of the woman is the phase by which the revelation of Jesus is able to pass (cf. 4,4) to the Samaritans. The primary function of the disciples is (1) to mark by their absence (4,7.27) the absolutely personal character of the dialogue between Jesus and the woman, and (2) to enter into dialogue with Jesus (4,31-38). Jesus' discourse (esp. vv. 32. 34. 37-38) echoes and comments on the structure of the narrative.
