Description
Summary:This study tests the influence of demographic size on participation in Jewish communities in the United States. Participation is operationalized as enrollment in Jewish schools, giving to the Jewish federation, and nonintermarriage. Data from 184 communities are studied. It is hypothesized that: (1) There is an inverse relationship between the number of Jews and rates of participation. (2) There is an inverse relationship between increase in the number of Jews and participation. Relationships between types of participation are also studied. Both hypotheses are supported using multiple regression analysis. The relationships are strongest in cities with more than 20,000 Jews; using change in number of Jews and number of Jews, 51 percent of the variance in rates of giving were explained. Regional effects were also discovered. For enrollment, region has a negative Northeastern effect; for federation giving, there is a positive Southern effect.
