Description
Summary:For the most part, the basic Christian communities of the Latin American Catholic Church have been interpreted as an exclusively lower-class phenomenon. There is growing evidence, however, that enthusiasm for these small, neighborhood-level organizations is beginning to grow among more affluent Catholics as well. Using data obtained from a small sample of CEBs located within the Brazilian Archdiocese of São Paulo, this paper compares the basic features of 11 groups located in middle-class areas with those of a corresponding number of the better known CEBs of the poor. The research findings clearly indicate that the middle-class CEBs are more than simply a recently emergent shadow phenomenon, and are surprisingly similar to their less affluent counterparts in terms of activity preferences, organizational structure, and Church ties.
