Description
Summary:The discussion is primarily concerned with the underpinnings and ramifications of the widespread focus on church-state relationships. While the American scene is the primary empirical concern, the significance of church-state tensions in a number of global areas is given considerable attention. Indeed, it is argued that increasing interdependence at the global level goes hand-in-hand with church-state tensions at the societal level. Church-state tensions are seen as manifestations of problems of societal identities and moral characteristics. The intersection of global problems of order and societal problems of order is stressed in the context of the argument that the church-state theme as presently analyzed raises significant problems for sociological theories of order, notably in connection with the relationship between religion and morality, as well as that between religion and politics.
