Description
Summary:This paper argues that recent methodological developments in anthropology-variously referred to as ethnoscience and/or cognitive anthropology-can be of enormous practical benefit in the close description of religious symbolization. A rough sketch of ethnoscientific methods is drawn and some of the more general assumptions about cognitive processes which inform the theoretical perspective underpinning ethnoscience are outlined. Brief attention is given to the larger possibilities of methodological re-orientation and the development of a hermeneutical sociology of religion wherein religious systems are approached through language data.
