| Summary: | The presence of change in the Catholic Church today is generally undisputed. More debatable, however, are the various sociological models offered as interpretations of the phenomenon. This paper briefly examines the advantages and disadvantages of four such models: the typological, dimensional, evolutionary and political. An alternative is suggested in terms of change in religious belonging. The latter is first contextualized before being subjected to theoretical and methodological consideration. While many of the proposals are tentative in nature, nevertheless it is advocated that further analysis be undertaken on concepts, such as authority and community, within the perspective of religious belonging. A final critique is presented as encouragement for others to engage in this type of research. |
