| Summary: | Many of Durkheim's ideas regarding the function of religion in modern society are to be found in his works on education, since he viewed the public school as an alternative structure to perform the integrative function that religion had in traditional society. This paper suggests first, that the “dogma” of Durkheim's secular ethic consists of national values; second, that the public school teacher has a “priestly” role in the transmission of the secular ethic; and third, that the “true believers” of Durkheim's civil religion are patriotic citizens. |
