| Summary: | This article reviews and evaluates the nature and extent of the empirical research on Fowler's faith development theory. It describes Fowler's theory of faith development and reviews the operational measures for determining faith stages. It concludes that only the broad contours of Fowler's theory have adequate empirical support. In general, the more structural-developmental dimensions of faith development theory have received more empirical support than the psychosocial dimensions. Several of the claims central to faith development theory lack conclusive empirical support at present. |
