| Summary: | Research into job satisfaction among pastors has so far done little to clarify the relationship between the satisfaction of pastors with the pastoral profession and the socio-cultural marginalization of that profession. It is argued here that the marginalization of the pastoral profession finds expression in a number of job characteristics, which in turn put pressure on the job satisfaction of pastors. These job characteristics are awareness of results, perceived significance of the pastoral profession, and recognition. This argument is borne out by empirical research among Roman Catholic and Protestant pastors (n=235). It was found that awareness of results is a key factor in job satisfaction among pastors. The discussion of the research findings points to the importance of clearly defined and specific goals. The formulation of clear goals makes it easier for pastors to assess the results of their work, which in turn makes for greater job satisfaction. Reference is also made to the problems that stand in the way of formulating clear-cut pastoral goals. |
