Description
Summary:In this paper, the new religious movements and the new social movements (peace, feminist, anti-nuclear, ecological) are compared on the basis of their defining characteristics, reasons for formation, social bases, ideologies, and future prospects. While seemingly opposite in both structure and outlook, the two can be conceptualized as the result of the eroding boundaries between the private and public domains in the contemporary world. New social movement theory suggests an approach to understanding the new religious movements which is more universal, evaluative and critical in nature.
