Summary:Recent media publicity concerning Oral Roberts and the PTL scandal and its subsequent bankruptcy have cost a shadow on all electronic preachers and caused increased government scrutiny of the operations of these ministries. It has also engendered renewed interest on the part of media scholars in this unique form of television programming. This study examines characteristics of the viewers of these religious programs and tests several sociological and economic theories concerning their reasons for viewing.
