總結:This paper utilizes Zald's political economy framework to analyze the development of academic freedom in church-related colleges. This analysis reveals a basic ambivalence in the fundamental normative structure of these colleges between adherence to sectarian values and pursuit of success as an academic institution. Because this ambivalence exists, the status of academic freedom is uncertain, depending largely upon shifting balances in the constituencies of the colleges. Ironically, restrictive practices, by dramatizing concern for sectarian values, offer limited protection for academic freedom.
