| Summary: | This study examined the relationship between parish responsiveness--providing programs and services, adoption of shared responsibility, and promotion of pastoral leadership--and parishioner commitment in 99 Roman Catholic parishes. These forms of responsiveness are important qualities expected in the post-Vatican Council II church, and were measured by 28 variables, which were reduced by factor analysis to nine orthogonal factors. Parishioner commitment was measured by: (1) financial donations to the parish, (2) weekend mass attendance, and (3) involvement in non-liturgical parish activities. The effects of the parish responsiveness factors in predicting these measures of commitment were investigated through multiple regression. Results suggest that those parishes which most implement the spirit of Vatican II receive greater financial contributions and mass attendance than those which do not. An interaction of parish size with the factor Vatican II was found for involvement. Small and medium parishes which demonstrate responsiveness are characterized by greater parishioner involvement. This relationship is considerably weaker for large parishes. |
