Description
Summary:The present action-oriented research addressed two objectives: the identification of groups of college students holding distinctively different religious orientations, and the assessment of the religious needs of these students as a basis for religious program planning. Towards this end, a religious survey was developed and administered to 670 undergraduate students at a large midwestern university. Three groups of students varying in religious orientation were identified through a cluster analysis: highly involved, moderately involved, and unchurched. The three groups manifested quite different religious needs. Highly involved students voiced needs which centered around traditional religious expression and evangelism. The unchurched needs focused on personal and social religious growth. Moderately involved students reported a broader set of needs, including those of both traditional religious and personal/social growth. The practical and theoretical implications of these results are considered.
