Description
Summary:Research on changes in religious identity has generally utilized generational status as the temporal measure. This paper examines the feasibility of utilizing migration period instead of generation as the temporal measure. These measures are highly correlated, and similar patterns of change are found with both--suggesting that they may be interchangeable. To the extent that the amount of variation explained is important, this paper suggests that the research methodology has been correct in most frequently utilizing biological generation. It is noted, however, that the amount of total variation explained by any temporal measure is small. This paper suggests that other factors--such as the particular group being studied, the length of time the group has been in the geographical area being studied, and the decision of whether a measure of cohort influence or a temporal measure only is appropriate--should also be considered.
