Description
Summary:The diversity of the organizational terminology used in the various Qumran rule texts is apparent in all levels of the community structure: the community as a whole, the different groups of members, the community officials, and the organizational units. This article examines whether and how the different terms can be fit together and studies their theological background. It is the thesis of this article that the terms did not merely function as organizational definitions but served a theological function as well, i.e., expressed the self-understanding of the community, and that sociological clarity was less the goal of the Essene writers than theological impact.
