| Summary: | The text of 4QMMT (Miqṣat Ma'aśe Ha-Torah) has been described by scholars as an epistle or treatise, which provides evidence for the founding schism of the Qumran community. This article assesses the historical significance of MMT, considered in terms of the genre to which the text is assigned. If MMT is an actual epistle, sent from a founder of the community to an outside opponent, it may contain evidence for the founding of the community. If the text is an intracommunal treatise (written in the style of an epistle) or a late, intracommunal historical text (as Steven Fraade has recently suggested in RevQ 76), MMT may provide very different evidence, for the construction of self-identity in the community at a later stage in its history. Le texte de 4QMMT a été décrit comme une lettre ou comme un traité contenant des informations sur le schisme fondateur de la communauté de Qumrân. Cet article évalue la signification historique de MMT selon le genre littéraire auquel on l'assigne. Si MMT est en réalité une lettre, envoyée par le fondateur de la communauté à un opposant extérieur, elle peut contenir des informations sur la communauté fondatrice. Si le texte est un traité adressé aux membres (écrit sous la forme d'une lettre), ou un texte historique postérieur adressé aux membres (comme le suggère Steven Fraade dans RevQ 76), MMT pourrait être un témoignage de la formation de l'identité propre de la communauté dans une période postérieure de son histoire. |
