Description
Summary:The liturgical formulas for daily blessings found in 4 Q 503 are arranged in accordance with the phases of the moon. The method used is the same as that found in 1 Enoch 73-79. This paper offers alternatives to the calendrical identifications of particular fragments made by the editor. As to the sectarian character of this composition, it lacks specific Qumran terminology but is compatible with an early stage in the development of the community. Two significant inferences concerning the calendar can be made: 1. The fragments confirm the method of reckoning the beginning of the day from evening, as in Jubilees and the Damascus Document. 2. They show that, at least in its early history, the sect did not repudiate the lunar calendrical calculations, as as done in Jubilees, but used them as a framework for its daily liturgy.
