| Summary: | The purpose of this article is to investigate the narrative of Ro 14:1-15:13 in light of household disputes in Rome. Exegetes commonly argue that verse 14:23 mentions food-related doubts of weak persons. However, the literary and cultural contexts of this verse permit a different understanding of the relationships between 'weak' and 'strong' household members. In particular, Paul describes inter-personal, social controversy (dispute), not intra-personal conflict (doubt). Thus, verses 14:1 and 14:23 frame the chapter by exposing disputes among participants in communal gatherings hosted by 'the strong' in Rome. The analysis redefines characterization in Romans 14: whereas doubt highlights the sinning of 'the weak', dispute reveals the sinning of 'the strong'.\n4207 Le but de cet article est d’examiner le récit de Rm 14,1-15,13 dans la perspective des disputes familiales à Rome. Les exégètes, en général, perçoivent 14,23 comme une allusion aux doutes sur les nourritures par les personnes faibles. Toutefois, le contexte littéraire et culturel de ce verset autorise une compréhension différente des relations entre les membres «faibles» et «forts» d’une famille. En particulier, Paul décrit une controverse inter-personnelle et sociale (dispute), et non un conflit inter-personnel (doute). Ainsi, les verset 14,1 et 14,23 encadrent le chapitre en décrivant les disputes parmi les participants aux réunions tenues par le «fort» à Rome.
