ON THE MEANING OF חשק הבר IN GEN 21:20

It is suggested that the enigmatic phrase השק הבר in Gen 21:20 was obtained from the original חשקה ב)כ(ר by a process similar to the one that produced the Qere בר and the Kethib בכר in 2Kgs 19:23. The consequent meaning "driver of the (mounted) archer" has its Sitz im Leben; contextually a...

520 |a It is suggested that the enigmatic phrase השק הבר in Gen 21:20 was obtained from the original חשקה ב)כ(ר by a process similar to the one that produced the Qere בר and the Kethib בכר in 2Kgs 19:23. The consequent meaning "driver of the (mounted) archer" has its Sitz im Leben; contextually agrees with allusions to Ishmael's predicament in the first part of the blessing for Joseph in Gen 49:22-24; and, fits his apparent shortness of stature and slight build, manifested by Hagar's handling of her 'child' in Gen 21.
