Description
Summary:In the letter EA 288 the ruler of Jerusalem defines the territorial frame in which he operates (11. 25-28), as extending "as far as the lands of Seir [and] as far as Gath-Carmel". This had been recognized as an encompassing circumscription that contraposes the south-eastern and north-western extremities of the area defined. It was also regarded as an overdrawn complaint with the comprehensive territorial frame phrased in a manner of "from Dan to Beer-sheba". In this study two ideas are suggested. One is that the area defined is the district administered from Gaza, with the southern delimitation indicating the border between sedentary and nomadic areas, and in addition, or alternatively, that the northern extremity indicates the extent of the anti-Jerusalem alliance. The other proposal is that the southern delimitation is a pattern inherited by Israelite scribal tradition, that figures prominently in the biblical boundary descriptions of the land of Canaan and Israel. The topographical data are elucidated, primarily those of Seir that had been queried, showing it to be in southern Transjordan and not in the Negeb.
