Summary: | After accepting Exod 20: 12-17 (// Deut 5:16-21) as a vestige of old lineage law designed to promote solidarity within the nuclear household (See RB 107-2 [2000], 1-30), this study addresses the literary and historical transmission of the Decalogue as it now appears. While critically reviewing and interacting with recent scholarship regarding the Decalogue and ancient Israelite law, the investigation examines the broader literary context of the Decalogue, particularly as it relates to the so-called Covenant Code. The author proposes an interrelationship between the literary structure of the Covenant Code and the Decalogue, and discusses the literary origin, evolution, and consolidation of ancient Israel's legal material. The conclusion emerges that the Decalogue's original function as family law waned as the fuller Code became an archaic preamble to an evolving corpus of legal and cultic material. |
