Description
Summary:This paper investigates Josephus' treatment, in Antiquitates Judaicae 9,1-17, of events in the middle period of the reign of king Jehoshaphat of Judah, i.e. his encounter with the prophet Jehu, judicial reforms, the overthrow of the enemy coalition, and the joint Judean-Israelite maritime venture. The study proceeds by way of a detailed comparison between the Josephan account and its Biblical source, i.e. 2 Chron 19,1-21,1 (as represented by MT, the Codex Vaticanus (B) and the Lucianic recension (L) of LXX and the Chronicles Targum). On the basis of that comparison, conclusions are drawn concerning the text-forms(s) of Chronicles available to Josephus in AJ 9,1-17 as well as the rewriting techniques employed by him in developing his own distinctive version of the above-cited events.
