Sundberg a cependant remis en cause cette opinion communément répandue, en plaçant le Canon au ive siècle en Orient. Ferguson a critiqué cette nouvelle théorie dans une communication passée inaperçue. Nous analysons ici la valeur des différents arguments et apportons quelques nouveaux éléments dans la discussion, pour aboutir à la conclusion que le Canon de Muratori date bien de la fin du iie siècle. The Muratorian Canon is a document of first-rate importance for the history of dogma and of theology, since it arguably come from the end of the 2nd century, whereas the greater part of the canon lists date from the 4th century. Albert Sundberg has however challenged this common opinion and put the Canon in the 4th century and in East. E. Ferguson in turn has criticized this new theory in a neglected article. We here evaluate the quality of the different arguments hitherto adduced and bring new elements to the discussion to conclude that the Muratorian Canon does indeed date from the end of the 2nd century. |
