| Summary: | The laura of Gerasimus in the Byzantine period can now be visualised in concrete terms. It extended over a wide and open area in which dozens of cells were scattered. Some of them were built like huts, while others were simply carved in the soft, chalky rock of the area. The community of the laura and the coenobium at its center numbered at its zenith (5th-6th centuries) about one hundred monks. The continuation of the laura into the medieval period and its renewal in the late 19th century indicate its importance among other monasteries in the Jordan Valley. Il est possible de donner un cadre à la laure byzantine de Gérasime qui comprenait quelques dizaines de cellules dispersées, parfois aussi simples que des cabanes, et d'ermitages creusés dans une falaise de craie. On évalue à une centaine de moines la communauté de la laure à son apogée (Ve-VIe s.). Que le centre monastique ait été encore habité au Moyen-Âge et restauré au XIXe s. montre l'importance de sa situation au bord du Jourdain. |
