Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II both pass as sons of Alexander Jannaeus and Alexandra. However, certain chronological indications in Josephus imply that Hyrcanus was born of the first marriage of Alexandra with Aristobulus I. In that case, the claims of Alexander II, after the death of his mother, can be understood in terms of the "rule of porphyrogenesis". |
