Deux points font hésiter : Comment couper cette phrase interminable? Comment la mettre à part du discours en « vous » qui la suit? Une solution nouvelle est proposée ici. La phrase initiale du v. 3a constitue un refrain qui est repris avant les six strophes, avec lesquelles il s'enchaîne excellemment en rendant le texte parfaitement intelligible, pourvu que les versets de raccord (en « vous » ) soient mis à part. For a long time now commentators have set apart vv. 3-4, or at least 3-12, the solemn opening of the Epistle to the Ephesians: this is acknowledged to be a liturgical text (a hymn, a "Benediction") which the author has placed at the head of his discourse. Two points give pause : how to break up this interminable sentence? How to set it apart from the "you" discourse which follows? A new solution is proposed here. The initial phrase of v. 3a constitutes a refrain which is repeated before each of the six stanzas; it coordinates excellently with them, at the same time making the text perfectly intelligible, provided the linking ("you") verses are put to one side. |
