Il nous donne la forme correcte des mots qwmh et smw, au verso (1. 3 et 6), précédemment incompris dans les amulettes du même genre. Celle-ci vient d'une tombe ayant fourni du matériel du VIe s. ap. J.-C, dont une autre amulette de même forme, avec une inscription grecque et une représentation de S. Georges tuant le dragon. Le site était habité par des chrétiens. On suggère que Kh. Sumeiriya, 5 km au sud, était à cette époque une installation samaritaine qui maintint le nom médiéval à l'époque arabe tardive ; de là provient peut-être cette amulette samaritaine. The article presents a typical bronze amulet bearing on each of its sides 6 lines in Samaritan Script of verses taken from the Pentateuch. It brings the correct form of the words QWMH (rev. line 3) and SMW (rev. line 6) misspelt and thus misinterpreted in the reading of other similar amulets. The amulet originates form a tomb containing 6th. century C.E. finds. Also from this tomb is a similarly shaped amulet bearing a Greek inscription and the depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. The site was inhabited by Christians. The author suggest that Kh. Sumeiriya (5 km. the south) was at that time a Samaritan settlement which preserved the name through medieval to late arabic periods. From here, perhaps, the Samaritan amulet originates. |
