Summary: | Marriage record data for the religious affiliations of brides and grooms were used to estimate the parameters for the frequency of endogamous- or mixed-Catholic marriages for the state of Iowa from 1953 through 1957: Separate frequencies for all state-reported marriages involving Catholics were determined for marriages of resident Iowa and out-of-state brides and for the population of first marriages and remarriages within each of the two residence groups. These data were compared with the diocese-reported endogamous- or mixed-Catholic marriages and for all marriages involving Catholics. The diocese-reported marriage data and the state-reported marriage data differ in several ways with respect of the religion of the marriage partners. |
