Resumo:The poetry of Abū ṭ-Ṭayyib al-Mutanabbī (d. 354/965) has been the focus of numerous commentaries, most of them composed by philologists. This paper presents a comparison between one commentary, Muʿjiz Aḥmad, written by the poet Abū l-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (d. 449/1058), and another authored by the philologist and Qurʾān scholar, Abū l-Ḥasan al-Wāḥidī (d. 468/1076), in order to determine whether the poet’s sensibility helped move the dominant philological approach in the direction of aesthetic criticism. It concludes that this was not deemed the proper focus of commentarial energies, which were focused instead on providing cultural competence in the linguistic features of the poetry, and suggests that critical discussions of a more impressionistic and artistic nature may have taken place in less formal oral exchanges.
