Description
Summary:This paper presents the thus-far unpublished floor mosaics from the North-West Church at Hippos (Sussita). The mosaics, entirely aniconic, represented a set of motifs common on floors of Syro-Palestinian churches. A few distinct features could identify them as a product of a local workshop active in the area in the late 6th cent. C.E. However, some differences in style and execution noted between the particular carpets demonstrate that they are not necessarily contemporaneous. The preserved mosaics bear testimonies to architectural and liturgical transformations that mark various phases of the church's occupation. They also record the names of three donors and - in two cases - the sums they contributed for the execution of the pavements.
