Description
Summary:This contribution is the first in a series of reports summarising recent research into the nature - the rationale behind the emergence, utilisation, and transmission - of so-called Old Coptic. This report presents the author's approach to Old Coptic (§1), introduces the sociolinguistic approaches utilised (§2), contextualises Old Coptic among the broader script innovations in Egyptian writing during the Roman Period (§3), and summarises the history of alphabetic writing of Egyptian (§4), before treating the first case study of this series; the emergence, utilisation, and transmission of Old Coptic at Oxyrhynchus (§5).
