Summary: | Like many immigrant bishops and priests before and after him, John England (1786–1842), bishop of Charleston (1820–1842), made several trips to Europe to recruit priests and nuns and to obtain funding for his diocese. In 1832, he traveled to Ireland, where he spent two months (from August to September) recruiting personnel, and then went on to France (October to November), consulting with "L'Association de la Propagation de la Foi" in Paris and Lyons. Thereafter, he journeyed to Munich (November 20) and Vienna (November 30) to seek funds for his diocese, and then on to Rome (December 25, 1832 to June 1833).1 At Dublin, Lyons, Vienna, and Rome, he published documents on the state of the church in his diocese and throughout the United States. While in Rome, too, he was appointed apostolic delegate to Haiti with a mission to examine the conditions of the church there and to negotiate with Jean-Pierre Boyer (1776–1850, the president of Haiti, 1818–1843) on ways to elevate the religious life of the Catholic people. |
