| Summary: | The following correspondence was received from Dr. Karel Dobbelaere and Dr. Bryan Wilson. For the sake of brevity we include only two paragraphs.On page 340, footnote 3 of Sociology of Religion Vol 62, Nr. 3, in the article The Cultural Significance of New Religious Movements: The Case of Soka Gakkai, it is alleged that the research which resulted in our book, A Time to Chant, was undertaken with funds provided by SGIThis assertion is based on unfounded speculation and is completely untrue. It is clearly stated on page v of the Preface of A Time to Chant that the initiative leading to this research for this study was entirely our own and was occasioned by the election of the junior author to a visiting fellowship at All Souls College (Oxford University) during his sabbatical, and that this college and the Department of Sociology (Catholic University of Leuven, Louvain, Belgium) provided all the financial and logistic support which the research entailed. The study was not undertaken at the invitation of Soka Gakkai, and was neither sponsored nor commissioned by that organisation. We did receive ready cooperation from both the leadership and the subjects of our study. This cooperation was restricted to giving us access to membership lists to enable us to draw our sample of respondents; the provision of a covering letter to each respondent from headquarters of what was then designated Nichiren Shoshu UK, explaining our purpose to the recipients and inviting their cooperation, as is clearly stated on p.41.The following reply was received from Dr. Lorne Dawson. Again for the sake of brevity we have included only one paragraph:In footnote #3 of my article “The Cultural Significance of New Religious Movements: The Case of Soka Gakkai,” Sociology of Religion 62(3), I mistakenly stated that Soka Gakkai International (SGI) provided funds to support Bryan Wilson and Karel Dobbelaere's research into the Soka Gakkai movement in Britain (i.e., A Time to Chant). I apologize for this error and regret any misunderstanding it may have caused. It was never my intention to imply that the funding of their research posed any problems. |
