| Summary: | Among the figures evoked during the centenary of the Great War, military chaplains had a reduced but visible place as the subject of some conferences, exhibitions and broadcasts. A century after the conflict, what were the reasons for this apparent resurgence of interest in these chaplains, who manifested a religious presence in the army and on the battlefields? Between history and memory, their renewed evocation says more about our present world than about the commemorated past or about their singular ministry: the confrontation between religion and war, confessional pluralism and tolerance, secularism presented as a framework of religious freedom, or even representations of the sacred union perceived as a model for today's society. Parmi les figures évoquées lors du centenaire de la Grande Guerre, les aumôniers militaires occupent une place réduite, mais visible, à travers conférences, expositions et émissions. Un siècle après le conflit, quelles sont les raisons de cet apparent regain d'intérêt porté à ces aumôniers, qui manifestaient une présence religieuse dans l'armée et sur les champs de bataille? Entre histoire et mémoire, leur évocation renouvelée en dit plus long sur notre monde actuel que sur le passé commémoré ou sur le ministère singulier d'un type de clerc: la confrontation de la religion avec la guerre, le pluralisme confessionnel et la tolérance, la laïcité présentée comme cadre de la liberté religieuse, voire des représentations de l'union sacrée entrevue comme modèle pour la société d'aujourd'hui. |
