Summary: | This article underlines the need for theological education to be ecumenical if it is to be genuine theological education, an injunction that applies to Orthodox churches as much as the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. The article highlights the 1920 encyclical of the Ecumenical Patriarchate that encouraged “relationships between the theological schools and the professors of theology” but states that an exchange of professors and students is not enough, since studying theology under a confessional prism is often reducing and impoverishing. Drawing on experiences such as the Higher Institute of Ecumenical Studies in Paris and the Institute for Higher Studies in Orthodox Theology in Chambésy, Switzerland, the article asserts that it is desirable to undertake theology together, in an ecumenical way. |
