Summary: | The text of Romans 13:1-7 challenges biblical hermeneutics in the context of absolutist, violent and corrupt governments. Recognizing the dominant hermeneutics in this regard, this article investigates the literary context of Romans 13, the meaning of obedience to the authorities in the Pauline context and that of revolutionary subordination. The study leads to the conclusion that the text should not be irresponsibly applied to modern states that are supposed to fulfill their duties for the benefit of citizens. |
