Description
Summary:Hymn tunes were altered in the hymn- and chorale-books of the 18th century. Ten Christmas hymns are used to exemplify this process in eleven representative books. Quotations from the introductions of these books are given as a means of setting out the principles the editors followed in their choice of tunes and in re-shaping them. In the older editions (Freylinghausen, Telemann) the arioso style predominates (arias with continuo, dances); in the later chorale-books the tunes are ironed out in both rhythm and melody, while in the collection of Wernigerode 1767 there is the additional influence of the early-classical 'sentiment'. The author comes to the conclusion that in the period of Rationalism hymns and church music in general lose creative contact with the main stream of music and that there is little poetical creativity in the words.
