Among such cases found in epistolary literature, a correspondence between two bishops, A and E, on the subject of the modes of plainchant, was published in 1981 by Joseph Smits van Waesberghe from two manuscripts. He could not identify the two bishops, A and E, however, because of disagreement in the two manuscripts about the order of the letters, A and E, or E and A. In fact, Egbert, scholaster of Liege, who was confused with Egbert, bishop of Trier, asked his question of Adelbold of Utrecht, who hastens to reply with a short treatise on the modes of plainchant. | ||
