| Summary: | Following a sometimes inexplicable practice, scribes copying letters written in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth centuries only gave the initials of the names of the author and recipient. Among such cases found in epistolary literature, a correspondence between two bishops, A and E, on the subject of the modes of plainchant, was published in 1981 by Joseph Smits van Waesberghe from two manuscripts. He could not identify the two bishops, A and E, however, because of disagreement in the two manuscripts about the order of the letters, A and E, or E and A. In fact, Egbert, scholaster of Liege, who was confused with Egbert, bishop of Trier, asked his question of Adelbold of Utrecht, who hastens to reply with a short treatise on the modes of plainchant. Suivant un usage parfois inexplicable, les copistes des lettres écrites aux Xe, XIe et XIIe siècles ne transcrivent que l'initiale des noms de l'auteur et du destinataire. Parmi les cas de ce genre relevés dans la littérature épistolaire, une correspondance entre deux évêques A et E, au sujet des modes du plaint-chant, a été publiée en 1981 par Joseph Smits van Waesberghe d'après deux manuscrits : mais le savant éditeur n'a pu identifier les deux évêques A et E en raison du désaccord des deux manuscrits au sujet de l'ordre des lettres A et E ou E et A. En fait, Egbert, écolâtre de Liège, confondu avec Egbert évêque de Trèves, pose sa question à Adelbold d‘Utrecht, qui s'empresse de répondre par un opuscule sur les modes du plain-chant. |
