Summary: | Following a sometimes inexplicable practice, scribes copying letters written in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth centuries only gave the initials of the names of the author and recipient. Among such cases found in epistolary literature, a correspondence between two bishops, A and E, on the subject of the modes of plainchant, was published in 1981 by Joseph Smits van Waesberghe from two manuscripts. He could not identify the two bishops, A and E, however, because of disagreement in the two manuscripts about the order of the letters, A and E, or E and A. In fact, Egbert, scholaster of Liege, who was confused with Egbert, bishop of Trier, asked his question of Adelbold of Utrecht, who hastens to reply with a short treatise on the modes of plainchant. |
