Summary: | The use of this expression is not influenced by Gnostic or Manichean readings prone to dualism, as Maria Gabriella Bianco thought ("Priscilliano e le potestates ventorum", Studie materiali di storia delle religioni, l‘Aquila : Japadre, 16, 1992, 275-288) ; it is rather due to the profane education he inherited from his academic background. The bishop of Avila takes up the expression potestas uentorum from Neoplatonic commentaries on Hesiod and Homer but uses the plural. He borrows potestates from Hilary of Poitiers, who combines the expressions Ep 2, 2 and Ep 6, 12. Influenced by his education and his Christian background, Priscillian thus conciliates the Biblical and philosophical traditions. L'usage de cette expression n'est pas dû à l'influence de lectures gnostiques ou manichéennes à tendance dualiste, comme l'a pensé Maria Gabriella Bianco (« Priscilliano e le potestates ventorum », Studie materiali di storia delle religioni, l'Aquila, Japadre, 16, 1992, p. 275-288), mais à sa culture profane héritée de sa formation scolaire. L'évêque d'Avila reprend la potestas uentorum des commentaires néoplatoniciens d'Hésiode et d'Homère en la mettant au pluriel. Il emprunte potestates à Hilaire de Poitiers, qui mélange, en des formules diverses, les expressions de Ep 2, 2 et Ep 6, 12. Influencé par ses études et par sa culture chrétienne, Priscillien concilie ainsi les traditions biblique et philosophique. |
