Jerome’s Letter 31 thanks Eustochium for a St. Peter’s Day gift of bracelets, doves and cherries. It has been argued recently that these gifts are really gingerbread. The present article endeavours to rebut this thesis. In particular evidence is adduced to show that Jerome’s vocabulary does not belong to gastronomy, but to exegesis. |
