Diese Assoziation wurde im Mittelalter geformt, aber weder von Franziskus selbst noch in der ersten Phase der von ihm inspirierten Bewegung. Zweifellos war Armut ein Teil der frühen franziskanischen Bewegung, aber es waren franziskanische Gelehrte und Theologen, die seit den 1230er Jahren die « franziskanische Armut » erfanden. Sie definierten sie als einen feierlichen und dauerhaften Verzicht auf Eigentumsrechte, der mit einem Leben in Armut und Bettelei einherging ; sie erklärten, es handele sich um den Weg zur Erlösung und denKern evangelischer Vollkommenheit ; sie erkannten in ihr das Markenzeichen ihres Ordens. Analysen von Texten, die zwischen 1230 und 1250 entstanden (Traktate, der erste Regelkommentar, Predigten, Konstitutionen) machen diesen Konstruktionsprozess deutlich. Es muß als Ironie gesehen werden, daß sich ausgerechnet die Armut, die auf Kosten anderer von Franziskus vertretener Tugenden wie der simplicitas zum Kern franziskanischer Identität wurde, zum zentralen Streitpunkt unter den Brüdern entwickelte und zum Zerwürfnis mit dem Papsttum, harten inneren Konflikten im Orden und seiner drohenden Spaltung beitrug. | ||

This association was forged in the Middle Ages, but not by Francis himself or in the first phase of the movement he inspired. Unquestionably, poverty was part of the early Franciscan movement, but it was Franciscan scholars and theologians who, from the 1230s onwards, invented « Franciscan poverty ». They defined it as the solemn and perpetual renunciation of property rights, accompanied by poor living and begging. They declared it to be the gateway to salvation and the heart of evangelical perfection, and saw it as the hallmark of their order. Analysis of texts produced from 1230 to 1250 (treatises, the first commentary on the Rule, sermons, and constitutions) reveals this process of invention. What followed was ironic. As poverty invaded Franciscan identity at the expense of other virtues advocated by Francis such as simplicity, its observance became a major point of contention among friars, contributing to a falling out with the papacy, bitter internal disputes in the Order, and its eventual split. | ||

L’analyse de textes produits dans les années 1230-1250 (traités, premier commentaire de la Règle, sermons et constitutions) révèle cette construction. Non sans ironie : comme la pauvreté envahissait l’identité franciscaine au détriment d’autres vertus comme la simplicité pourtant prônée par François, son observance est devenue le sujet majeur de débat parmi les frères, jusqu’au point de rupture avec la papauté, aux graves dissensions internes dans l’ordre et à sa division. | ||
