| Summary: | The Liber exemplorum ad usum praedicantium is a book of exempla composed by an English Franciscan around 1275-1279. The author, in the elaboration of his work, shows both ingenuity and discretion. The headings concerning the res inferiores are arranged in alphabetical order, whereas a strictly logical rubrication is maintained for the first part of his work, which discusses celestial matters. The adaptation of the exempla during transcription and the supplementary comments and practical advice tend to popularize and clarify the stories, rendering their interpretation unequivocal. This modulation of the exempla in no way alters the Christian teachings they contain. The special characteristics of the Liber exemplorum place the work at the crossroad between two periods in the history of the genre. Le Liber exemplorum ad usum praedicantium est un recueil d’exempla composé par un franciscain anglais vers 1275-1279. L’auteur, dans l’élaboration de son ouvrage, fait à la fois preuve d’ingéniosité et de prudence. Il utilise l’ordre alphabétique dans l’agencement des rubriques concernant les res inferiores, mais maintient une rubrication strictement logique dans la première partie de son ouvrage qui traite des choses célestes. L’adaptation des exempla lors de la transcription, ainsi que les commentaires et conseils pratiques qui leur sont liés, entrent dans une optique de vulgarisation, de clarification et d’univocité. Ce travail sur et autour des récits, cependant, ne modifie en aucun cas l’enseignement chrétien qu’ils contiennent. Ces caractéristiques font du Liber exemplorum un ouvrage à la croisée de deux époques dans le milieu des recueils d’exempla. |
