| Summary: | This year Italy celebrates the 140th anniversary of its unification. The unification was achieved by gradual annexation of different states that made upthe Italian peninsula by the former ancient kingdom of Sardinia. The Papal States were immersed in the integration movement with the consequent loss of their territories. This article highlights the most relevant moments and circumstances that surrounded these territorial losses, from the French Revolution, with the annexation by France of the Venassino County and Avignon, until the occupation of Rome by the troops of Victor Emmanuel II, on September 20th of 1870.The negotiations that follow Rome's occupation led to the Lateran Treaty andthe creation of the Vatican City State. Este año se celebra en Italia el 140 aniversario de su unidad. Unidad que se consiguió tras la anexión paulatina de los diferentes estados que configuraban la península italiana al antiguo reino de Cerdeña. Los Estados Pontificios se vieron inmersos en este movimiento integrador con la consiguiente pérdida de los territorios que conformaban el Estado de la Iglesia. Este artículo pretende rememorar los momentos más importantes y las circunstancias que envolvieron estas pérdidas territoriales, desde la revolución francesa, con la anexión por partede Francia del condado Venassino y Avignon, hasta la ocupación de Roma por las tropas de Víctor Manuel II, el 20 de septiembre de 1870, concluyendo con el proceso negociador que condujo a los Pactos de Letrán y la creación del Estado de la Ciudad del Vaticano. |
